I saw it as a very negative thing to act femininely in any kind of way because I "was reinforcing gay stereotypes".īut this is bullshit. When I first started identifying as a gay man, I was very fearful to be associated with the stereotype of flamboyance and stuff. Post added at 04:45 PM - Previous post was at 04:42 PM.

On the contrary, I also see gays vocally and inexhaustibly trying to distance themselves from the gay gay type of gays, which is very problematic because it creates a very awkward kind of inner-discrimination towards feminine dudes (gay or straight or whatever). I know a few gay men that get irritated by this and really want to stand apart from the "flamers". People (ones that are more easily influenced) will (some already do) associate that kind of behavior with the entire homosexual community. The only real problem here is that flamboyant homosexuals are the most outspoken and they are easily noticed. If a "flaming" gay guy walked by or spoke to me or whatever, I'd just look at 'em or respond like anyone else, and that wouldn't even be a conscious effort on my part. Since I'm so used to seeing something similar with the fa'afefine in Samoan culture, it really is an every day thing for me to see a "flamboyant" attitude/personality. For me, just because they're, uh, "flamboyant" (soz that I keep using that label but I don't know how else to differentiate this) doesn't give me reason to think them odd or to treat them differently from someone who is straight or a "normal" gay. Good for you.Įdit edit edit: Erm, lemme just make clear when I say I-don't-care it doesn't mean I don't care for them as people. So when I cross over into the, uh, more "Western" part of my life and I see a "flamboyant" gay dude, I dun givva fuck.

A fa'afefine dresses and acts like a woman, though born a male, and this is totes normal for me to see. In my culture, there's a third gender called a fa'afefine which means embracing the spirit of a woman.
#FLAMBOYANT GAY DEFINITION MOD#
Well, that's the tl dr version and I have to expand on that otherwise an SD mod will come along with a dick-smack. Society is still grossly bigoted and is in need of an ideological shift in regards to people's sexuality. The whole notion of the flamboyant homosexual is kind of a new niche for them to find identity in and to be 'normal' again. Because society sees gay people as deviant, their gender identities are warped and it's hard for them to conform to what consensus says they 'should' be like. On the other hand, lesbians are cast as manly dykes. Women are more likely to be accepting of homosexuality, and the whole notion of masculinity is reliant on heterosexuality, sexual prowess, opposition to perceived feminine behaviour (because opposites are totally hot, apparently) and these things don't accommodate many gay people. It's totally wrong because the media's representation of gay people relies on that cliche to an offensive degree and it makes it significantly harder for young gay people to believe that they're normal and the same as everybody else.Ĭould also have something to do with the social construction of masculinity. They effectively become a stereotype because it's a way of finding security in their own image. I think it's to do with the cultural image people have of gay people, and it's a way of some gay people to conform or find acceptance where they've previously struggled to do so.

Personally, I do not have a problem with gay men, but I do feel uncomfortable around flamboyant gay men, to the point were I would rather avoid them at the supermarket if I see them
